Protecting your children from Web abuse

Internet security is a big problem; even more when it comes to children. Protection of systems and the youngsters using them is the responsibility of parents, caregivers and teachers. As personal monitoring is virtually impossible, three fundamental steps can be taken:

1. Teaching children about the content and dangers of the internet using in a nonprofessional language. There is obviously no point in explaining the intricacies of a “buffer over-run exploit” to a child that can barely spell “computer” or explaining the dangers of internet chat rooms to a teenager so well versed on computing that they could be teachers themselves.

2. Installing and setting up automatic systems to control the content received via Internet.
These systems–parental control filters–check the sites accessed from the computer and block material according to the parameters set.

3. Installing, configuring and updating virus and intrusion preventing system for protecting your children from web abuse. This system should provide protection on a number of fronts: Viruses, Trojans, spyware and all types of malware in general, including protection for email and against intrusions from hackers.

Protecting children who use the internet is a necessity, but fortunately one that is not difficult to achieve. The aim must be to safeguard the educational process of the child without exposing them to dangers that could affect their development, while providing them the best learning and discovery tool modern society has created Internet
